Wash basins come in all shapes and sizes. When choosing one it’s important to know the basics. Here are some things to bear in mind:

  • Ceramic washbasins situated on pedestals are the most common type, however toughened glass and stone basins are rapidly becoming the basin of choice.
  • When ordering a basin, make sure you select appropriate taps and fittings at the same time.
  • Most basins have one 1 3/8 inch (35mm) diameter tap hole.
  • Other basins tend to have two holes with 7 inch (180mm) gap between.
  • A minority of basins have a central tap hole with holes each side that can be shut if required. It’s important that an expert fits this type of basin.
  • Waste outlets tend to be 1 1/4 inch (32mm) diameter and should include a plug.
  • Most ceramic basins usually have a built in overflow duct. On others a flexible over flow has to be fitted.
