Causes and Cures for Dark Patches on Painted Timber

Posted by Peter Brady on Mon 2nd October 2006 at 06:00 AM, Filed in Decor

CAUSES

1. Usually the result of imperfections in the timber such as knots.

2. Knots can ooze resin which stains and distorts the paintwork.

CURES

1. Remove paint by using chemical stripper or heater, then sand down knot. Use an epoxy sealant on the knot. Let it dry, sand down a little and repaint.

READER COMMENTS:

I don’t think you need to use something as complicated as and “epoxy sealant”. Lightly sanding the area where the knot is bleeding through and then applying a coat or two of shellac and then repainting the area should solve the problem.

Regarding getting rid of bleed through of knots in wood…a gentleman said applying a coat or two of shellac and the repainting should solve the problem.  Wrong.  We just had our ceiling painted a week ago using 2 coats of shellac and 2 coats of paint, and the knots are already bleeding through.  Next idea?
