Loft and Attic Conversions

Key points to consider about any loft / attic conversion.

1. The loft space in most houses can be converted provided there is enough headroom. Check to see how much useable head room you might have

2. Stronger joists will have to be fitted in order to carry the floor - most attic joists are only designed to support the ceiling beneath, not people and furniture.

3. You should not attempt a loft conversion without expert advice and supervision. Seek advice from specialist loft converters and an architect.

4. You need to consider how you will get to the attic space from the floor below. Fixed or spiral stair cases are the best options.

5. Stairs are covered by a myriad of regulations regarding step size, angle of ascent, minimum headroom and balastrade size. Take professional advice from your architect as to what maybe acceptable.

6. You need to ensure that the loft space has adequate ventilation and natural light. Dormer windows are the usual choice for meeting these requirements or alternatively a roof light.
