Re-aligning a Gutter

If you notice that a gutter is pooling water, you may want to first check that the screw holding the supporting bracket hasn’t come loose.
The best way to deal with this is to replace the screw with a fresh wall plug and use a galvanised or zinc plated screw to secure the bracket back.
If loose screws aren’t the problem, you need to re-align the gutter. The following tools and materials will be required:
• Ladder with a stand off bracket.
• 150mm nails.
• Hammer.
• Drill with wood bit.
• Wall plugs.
• Zinc plated number 8 screws.
You can then follow these procedures:
• Hammer a nail into the fascia board near each end of a loose gutter and one nail in the middle of the gutters length. This will help to support it. If the piece of gutter is longer than 5 ft or is made from iron, you may need more nails.
• Extract all the screws holding supporting brackets.
• Attach a length of string at one end of the gutter and stretch across the fascia board under the gutter. You need to ensure that there is a fall towards the downpipe of approximately 16mm in every 3m.
• Remove the supporting brackets that allow the gutter to sag.
• Re-attach the supporting brackets to the fascia so that they are level with the string. This should give the correct fall to the downpipe.
• If the gutter is attached directly to the fascia (i.e without supporting brackets) you move the whole gutter into alignment with the string. Then reattach using galvanised screws.
