Removing Ceramic Tiles

Removing old ceramic tiles can be very difficult and often results in damage to the wall.

Where possible, it is always far better to recolour existing tiles (use specialist tile paints), replace damaged tiles or tile over the top of older tiles.

If tiles have to be removed, you will need the following tools:

Safety goggles, dust mask, wide steel masonry chisel, paint scraper, hot air stripper, protective gloves.

You can then follow the procedures set out below:

1. Wear protective goggles, gloves and a long sleeved shirt. As you chip away at the tiles, splinters of glass will fly off the glaze - hence the importance of keeping yourself well covered.

2. Using the chisel and hammer gently lever the tiles from the wall. Some will break, some will come off in one piece - it will take a while to get them all off!

3. A hot air stripper will help soften the tile adhesive and enable you to gently scrape from the wall.

4. Once you have removed all the tiles and adhesive, you can begin to prepare the wall for retiling.
