Staircase Building Regulations

If you need a new staircase for a loft conversion you will need to be aware of the key building regulations that cover this.

The process can be started by submitting an application to the local authority Building Department for Full Plans Approval prior to the work beginning which can take up to 8 weeks. Alternatively you can apply for a Building Notice that will allow work to begin within 48 hours.

The key points to bear in mind are:

1. Are the floor joists strong enough to take any new loads.

2. Document K is the section of Building regulations that applies to staircases.

3. Sufficient landings must be allowed for at the top of a flight.

4. Clear headroom for staircases to loft conversions maybe reduced to 1,900mm.

5. Staircases used by children should not have open risers or spindles that are in excess of 100mm.

6. The minimum tread size should be 220mm and risers should be between 190mm and 220mm.
